Specialty Classes

Beginning Garment Sewing For ages 10 to 100

5 classes, 2 hours each week, $133.00.

(Intro Class is #1, plus 4 more classes at the same day & time each week.)

This 5-week beginning class may be taken only once.

Project costs are extra..

*Minimum age is 10 years old.

Students aged 10 -12 will make either pajama shorts or pants for their first project. Students aged 13 and up may select any project they choose. This class covers the fundamentals of beginning sewing for the new sewer, “haven’t-sewn-for-years” sewer, and those who desire a refresher. Students choose their own project and work at their own speed. Includes measuring for pattern size, pattern selection and pattern envelope reading, fabric and notion selection, pattern layout, cutting, sewing machine use, and sewing to complete the garment. Due to the complexity of the project students choose, completion may not be possible in this 5-class/week session.

Class #1, this is the INTRODUCTION CLASS:

Fabric information, measuring for pattern size, pattern selection and pattern envelope reading, fabric and notion selection are discussed. Students will actually shop for their fabric and pattern in this first class meeting. Fabric pre-wash and care information discussed, and paper pattern piece cut-out. A sewing machine is not needed for this first class meeting.

Class #2:

Students return with their washed fabric and the tissue pattern pieces cut out (not the fabric), ready to layout their project. Instruction is given regarding grain-line of fabric and pattern piece coordination, fold-line vs. selvage relationship, etc. Cutting out of project and sewing starts this class. Sewing machine threading, and operating instructions are offered.

Classes #3, 4, & 5:

Students work to complete their projects. Due to the complexity of the project chosen, and the speed of the students accomplishing construction steps, completion may not be possible in the four class meetings.

*Minimum age is 10 years old.

Intermediate & Advanced Garment Sewing

4 classes, 2 hours each week, $110.00

(same day and time each week)

Project costs are extra

This class may be repeated as many time as desired by student, in 4-week sessions.

This class is for the student that knows how to read a pattern envelope and select fabric,

(but sizing may be an issue - this will be discussed during the first class meeting).

Any and all of these subjects can be included in an Intermediate Class:

  • Tailoring
  • Knits
  • Upcycling old/used garments
  • Costume sewing
  • Garment alterations
  • Mending
  • Buttonholes
  • Zippers
  • Formal Wear
  • Lining
  • Pattern Alterations & Fitting
  • Home Decorating items

Class #1:

Class #1 is the same as class #2 noted above in the beginning class, and continues from there. Sewing machines are needed for this first class meeting. Students may select projects with zippers and/or buttons. They arrive for class with their fabric washed (if washable fabric) and the tissue pattern pieces cut out. Please "bubble cut" out the paper pattern pieces. That means cut the pieces out beyond the size lines, leaving all sizes intact. You are simply separating the individual pattern pieces from the huge tissue paper sheets. If you feel confident enough to do so, you may pin the paper pattern pieces to the fabric if you would like, but please do not cut the fabric. Instruction is given regarding grain-line of fabric and pattern piece coordination, fold-line and selvage relationships, etc. Cutting out of project and sewing starts this class. Sewing machine threading, and operating instruction is offered if student needs help with their machine.

Classes #2, 3 & 4:

Students work to complete their projects. Due to the complexity of the project chosen, completion may not be possible in the four class meetings.

Specialty Class Descriptions

Specialty classes are not a substitute for a cohesive 5-week beginning sewing class

nor a 4-week intermediate class. Specialty classes, or one-time classes, do not teach pattern use nor reading. Specialty classes are not private lessons.

They are incorporated into established group classes where space exists.

1. Learn to use your Sewing Machine, one-time class

Pre-registration and pre-payment are required

$35.00, for 2-hour class

Students must bring their own sewing machine to this one-time class

This class is for those students who wish to simply learn how to use their standard sewing machine. Maybe you just received it or maybe it's been in the box for years! Maybe you know how to sew, but not use your machine, then this is the class for you! Learn basic use plus threading, bobbin winding, use of the different stitch styles and feet that came with the machine. Education of basic standard and electronic sewing machines is offered. This can is scheduled as a one-time visit to any 2-hour class.

NO NEED to take this class if you are planning to attend a 5-class/weeks Beginning Sewing Class session. Sewing machine use IS INCLUDED in regular, weekly sewing classes.

This class does not include: Embroidery machine use or use of embroidery units attached to sewing machines. No pattern use/reading nor sewing construction techniques.

2. Mend & Hem, and/or Alterations

Pre-registration and pre-payment are required.

$35.00, for 2-hour class or $65.00 for two, 2-hours classes

Ok, you admit it, you don't really have time for a whole class session and you really don't want to sew stuff, but your really want to know how to mend and hem and do minor alterations. Bring your most challenging projects: sewing on buttons, shortening dresses or skirts, replacing jeans zippers, hem your kids or spouse's pants, or sew on patches and badges to uniforms. Learn as much as possible in two hours. Can be scheduled as any one-time visit to any 2-hour intermediate/advanced class where space permits.

This class does not include pattern use/reading.

  • Students must bring their own sewing machine and know how to use it.
  • Students must bring actual garments to be altered. They must be marked (pinned or taped or stapled) in place where the wearer wants the alterations to take place. Hems need to be pinned or marked, seams need to be pinned or marked. This marking and pinning cannot be done in class. With regret it takes up to much time from other students. You know where the adjustments should be made and I'll teach you how to sew the alterations!

3. One-Time Serger/Overlock Class

Pre-registration and pre-payment are required

2 hours, $35.00

This is designed for the student who just took the machine out of the box. Learn the basics of threading your 3 or 4-thread machine, standard uses for your machine, as well as specialty stitches and tricks you can do with your serger. Join us for this confidence building class! This class can be scheduled mornings, afternoons or evenings. With regret, 5-thread (or more) serger instruction is not available.

4. Open Sewing Class

Open class attendance, $35.00 per 2-hour class

Pre-registration and pre-payment are required

This class is for experienced students who wish to work on a specialized sewing technique such as tailoring, special occasion and wedding sewing, knits, costume sewing, or other specialized specific technique. Choose a single class meeting at the intermediate/advanced level to learn to sew in a zipper. Pattern use/reading and sewing machine use/instructions are not offered in this class.

5. Private Lessons

$65.00 per hour, two-hour minimum

Pre-registration and pre-payment are required

You may schedule a one-time class or weekly classes held at the sewing shop, at a mutually agreed time.
